You do not necessarily need to meditate more, take a break from your business, or wait until your nervous system feels perfectly regulated before you go after your next business goal.
Sometimes, the most supportive thing you can do for your nervous system is create safety, take care of your body, process shame, build simple routines, and take action with what you have right now.
Because here’s the thing: your body is coming with you as you grow.
If you’re trying to sign your first client, grow from $100K to $200K, become more visible online, launch a new offer, or build an entirely different level of business, your nervous system is part of that process.
So instead of treating your body like something you have to overcome to become successful, let’s talk about how to support it while you create the results you want.
I like to think about your nervous system simply as your body.
You have your mind and your beliefs on one side. You have your strategies, actions, and business results on the other.
And what’s in between?
Your body.
Your body wakes up every morning. Your body goes to your nine-to-five. Your body gets on camera. Your body creates content, sells, coaches clients, manages your team, and handles increased visibility.
So if you’re preparing for a bigger season in your business, you also need to ask:
What does my body need to support me through this transition?
Here are five areas I’ve been thinking about.
One of the biggest pieces of nervous system support is safety.
And one of the biggest places entrepreneurs feel unsafe?
Money.
If you don’t believe you can financially take care of yourself, it’s going to be difficult to convince your body that everything is okay.
That’s why I believe you have to look at your finances.
Do you know what’s coming in and going out?
Do you know when your bills are due?
Do you have a budget?
Do you know how much you need every month?
Do you know what resources you could access if something went wrong?
I like to think about this as a “safety sun.”
Your bank account isn’t your only resource.
Maybe you could take contract work. Maybe you could return to a nine-to-five. Maybe you have access to credit. Maybe you could sell something. Maybe friends or family could support you in an emergency.
That doesn’t mean you want to use every option.
It means your body knows you have options.
There’s a difference.
Sometimes you need to sit down with the numbers and actually find the safety that’s already there.
We can make nervous system support incredibly complicated.
But sometimes you need to start with the basics.
How are you eating?
How are you moving?
How are you sleeping?
Don’t knock the basics.
You might be trying to solve a business problem when your body is exhausted.
You might think you need another mindset exercise when you actually need better sleep.
You might think you’re incapable of handling your business when you’re simply running on empty.
Pay attention to what gives you energy and what takes it away.
Find movement that helps you manage stress. Create a sleep routine that allows you to think clearly. Notice how your daily habits affect your energy.
You don’t have to optimize your entire life overnight.
Start by supporting the body that’s building the business.
Nervous system work and shame can go hand in hand.
Let’s say you post on social media, book a sales call, and don’t close the sale.
Then you start beating yourself up:
“Why didn’t I handle that objection?”
“I should know how to do this by now.”
“I’m never going to figure this out.”
Now your body associates selling with shame.
Why would it be excited to do it again?
The same thing can happen after an unhappy client, a refund request, a failed launch, or an expensive business decision.
You make the mistake mean something about you.
One way to interrupt that cycle is to normalize mistakes.
Business owners get refund requests.
Business owners make bad investments.
Business owners launch things that don’t work.
Business owners discover things they didn’t know.
That’s entrepreneurship.
You are also allowed to simply say:
“I didn’t know that.”
You don’t have to shame yourself for learning something after making the mistake.
You’re allowed to keep learning.
Your body needs some structure.
That doesn’t mean your calendar needs to be scheduled down to every 15-minute increment.
It means you need enough structure that you aren’t waking up every morning asking:
“What am I supposed to do today?”
A simple routine allows your body to rest inside the plan.
Consider creating a yearly business plan you revisit throughout the year.
Create a loose weekly schedule for content, coaching, sales, planning, and learning.
Then think about your mornings and evenings.
What helps you start your day grounded?
What helps you actually disconnect when work is over?
You also need to know what reduces your stress.
Every woman should be able to name a few things she can turn to when she’s overwhelmed—not just work harder or doom scroll.
Maybe it’s reading.
Maybe it’s running.
Maybe it’s gardening.
Maybe it’s dancing.
Maybe it’s doing absolutely nothing for a little while.
Know what works for your body.
This one has been a huge breakthrough for me:
Sometimes it feels better to do the thing you’re scared of than to sit there thinking about doing it.
It can feel better to post the content.
It can feel better to sell.
It can feel better to take the action.
Because when you’re sitting on your hands, you’re often thinking about old failures, old evidence, and everything you believe you’re missing.
Action creates new evidence.
But the key is situational action taking.
You have to take action within the situation you have right now.
When I was a social worker building my business, I didn’t have an entire workday available.
I had about an hour.
So I needed to ask:
What can I do with the hour I actually have?
That’s different from constantly telling yourself you’d succeed if only you had more time.
When you tell yourself you’re missing something required for success, you’re creating more stress.
Instead, ask:
What do I have access to right now?
Then move.
Maybe you’re waiting for a bigger audience.
Maybe you’re waiting for more time.
Maybe you’re waiting until your finances change.
Maybe you’re waiting until you feel confident.
But waiting can become its own source of stress.
Taking one action within your current circumstances reminds your body:
I have resources. I have options. I can move. I can figure things out.
You don’t have to take a break from your entire business every time something feels uncomfortable.
And you don’t have to make your nervous system the reason you can’t move toward your goals.
Support your body while you move.
Create safety.
Take care of yourself physically.
Understand your shame.
Build simple routines.
Then take action within the situation you’re actually in.
Your nervous system doesn’t have to be something you fight on the way to your next business goal.
It can be something you learn how to support as you grow.
