We’ve been taught to obsess over the number in our bank account. But what if that number is only telling 10% of the story? In this deeply personal birthday episode, Dielle Charron reflects on the #1 lesson she learned in her twenties: that financial safety isn’t about how much money you have—it’s about how safe you feel. This post will challenge everything you think you know about money, safety, and success.
Dielle gets straight to the point: “Your bank account is only about 10% of your financial safety.” It doesn’t tell the whole story. It can’t account for your ability to earn, your support system, your access to credit, or your investments. When you hinge your safety on that one number, you cut yourself off from the full picture.
So what does build safety?
“Just because it’s not in your checking account doesn’t mean you don’t have it,” she reminds us.
The real culprit is often capitalism’s demand for independence. We’re told that leaning on others—or on credit—is weak. Dielle calls B.S. “You weren’t meant to do life alone,” she says. Cultures around the world pool money, support each other, and redefine what it means to be resourced. Why shouldn’t we?
Dielle ends the episode with a truth bomb: all money counts. Whether it’s from a program, a surprise client, a referral, a loan, or your job—money is money.
Stop disqualifying your wins. Stop saying “it doesn’t count” unless it came from the “right” source.
Financial safety isn’t a number. It’s a knowing. A decision. A truth you return to again and again: I always have access to money. And I will always be okay.
